Well I finished the 8 Films to Die For. It was a lot of fun this year,
All 8 films kept my interest, and there wasn't one I would have said 'Nah,
I could have lived without seeing that'. So lets tackle each movie with
a short blurb.
Lumberjack Man. Flick flick, a send up of the slasher genre. Rather
funny, with a nice amount of gore. You'll never look at pancakes quite
the same afterwards. 3.5 out 5 machetes.
Re-Kill. Imagine the 'COPS' show after a zombie apocalypse. Between
the decent zombie hunting scenes there are amusing TV commercials about
life post apocalypse. Sounds goofy, but it worked well. 4 out of 5 brains.
The Wicked Within. Demonic possession and dysfunctional family. A
little forced in spots, but it was enjoyable enough. 3 out of 5 spewed
pea soup.
Unnatural. What's worse than a killer polar bear? A genetically modified
killer polar bear, who's hungry. Wins for the most epic final kill of the
night, and was good all around. 4 out 5 scientists playing god.
Suspension. Tortured teen has issues. Wasn't the best movie, paced
kind of slow, and too much teen drama. But it gets points for a fairly
unique plot, and some inventive gore. 3 out of 5 slaughtered prom queens.
Bastard. Weird flick, serial killers on a road trip pick up a pack
of people with major issues, and are then killed off by another maniac in
a mask. High on the suffering and enough foul language that I even went
'Err, ok?' Probably my least favorite of the night, but even so it had
me guessing. 3 out 5 crazed maniacs
Wind Walkers. I think the mostly first Native American zombie flick I've
ever seen. Slow to get started, but it once it got into gear the gore
and inventiveness. 3.5 severed pig heads.
Murder in the Dark. Last one I watched, and it became my favorite.
A multi-cultural party of medical types in Turkey visit a castle, and
become the target of organ legging. Who's the person legging it? Well
I guessed wrong, repeatedly. (Oh and extra points for the director and
actors revealing that the film was mostly improv) 4.5 harvested kidneys.
So yeah, we had 2 zombies, 4 slashers, 1 supernatural and 1 monster. I'd
have liked some more supernatural and less slashers, but that's just my
tastes. All the movies had high production qualities, and as I said, nothing
was bad, even my least favorite, 'Bastard' was more a question of tastes
verses quality. So yeah, if you're looking for horror this Halloween
season, check out the 8 Films to Die For. You'll have a good time.
Because I can, I decided that I'll be celebrating my Spawning Day all weekend.
Woke up, got moving, started watching the 'After Dark Films: 8 Films to
Die For' set. I've been a fan since the first set was released oh so
many years ago (Gravedancers in the theatre with Ufies). The 2nd year
me and Amythest watched all 8 in the theatre over a weekend, and I've
watched the rest when they came out on DVD. This year, it's Amazon
Streaming. Yay movies. Yay quirky movies of horror. One zombie, one
horror comedy, and now one haunted/possessed. So far, all have been pretty
decent.
While watching movies, I've made lunch, and I'm working on my Friday VM
updates. For dinner I'll probably order a pizza, or go get a cheesesteak.
Classic Vulpine dinner. Good way to spend day one of Spawning Day weekend,
geeking...computer, horror, and Mythos stuff. I have a bunch of unsorted
props and papers I was thinking of organizing. Yay organized eldritch
horror.
So that's about it for right now, I'll catch you all later. *waves a
tentacle*
Weird dream last night. It was about a eldritch spawn, aka the gang
from 'The Dunwich Horror' becoming president of the US. It mixed, either
it was 3rd persion, watching things happen, or it was first person and
I was the guy running for president. Weird, the Great Old Ones tend to
be very moderate/centerist in political affiliation. And somehow,
he/me won. Guess the American people are looking for a REAL change.
Weird. And no, I'm not going to throw my hat into the ring.
So yeah, I'm out of it today. Last night's crazy has me all kinds of
thrown off. Not really planning to do anything special today. *sigh*
Oh well, I'll probably write more later. Ciao.
First of all, I'm fine. Second, we had a small fire at the Château Innsmouth
apartment complex. My upstairs neighbors had a kitchen fire. Again,
all is fine, well save they probably have smoke damage. Local FD was
here quick, and took care of everything, including checking the air
in my apartment. I'm back in Château Innsmouth, and other than I've got
a snoot full of smoke from what was coming out of the upstairs apartment
and I'm VERY wound up. I don't think I'll go to bed anytime soon.
Oh well, nothing horrible happened, and all is well. *twitch twitch*
Well, clothes shopping went ok. 1 dress shirt, 2 polos, 2 pairs of slacks,
2 sets of cargo pants (sale), 1 tie *shudder*, 1 belt and a skeleton.
Amazing what you can get at Walmart, though I don't think the skeleton is
real, it is only 20" tall *wink* One of the items on my 'someday' wish
list is get a quality anatomical skeleton for decoration purposes.
I've been a skeleton fan since I was a kid, I blame D&D and Ray Harryhausen.
So I had a weird check out, a tie and a skeleton in the same bag. (The
tie is scarier). Oddly I couldn't find regular cotton tshirts, and only a
few polos. Oh well, tshirts are pretty safe to buy online, so Amazoning
I go.
After wally world, I grabbed some donuts from Dunkin' Donuts due to random
craving, then I stopped by one of the Halloween stores to go walking around.
Didn't get anything, though I was tempted to get a zombie squirrel. But,
I was good, I did buy a skeleton after all *wink* Then I went to the
mall and did my walking. Made goal, and caught up on my weekly goal, go
me. Came home, got mail, unloaded and now I'm vegging. Will cook
up dinner in a while. Also came up with inspiration for a Halloween
costume that won't cost me anything, and fits the theme of 'fantasy'
(not that kind you pervs). Yes, there will be pictures (probably).
So yeah, it's been a busy day. But things got done, and I'm still
feeling good (even if my pant size is incrementing up again). Oh well,
that's life here at Château Innsmouth. Catch you all tomorrow when we
pray that my oil change is just an oil change.
Well, it's Wednesday. I slept in, mostly because I was REALLY comfortable,
so I kept hitting snooze. Got up, took a bit to get in gear...and then
I went and was a responsible adult. I made an appointment to have my
Kia's oil changed tomorrow, I made a shopping list for assorted
interview/work clothes. Not a suit, not on this trip. That will come
though, following advice from a certain biker I know. But I'm not going
to get it at Walmart or Target, and I want to take along a second set
of eyes for opinions. Polo shirts and slacks, I can handle that on my
own. Also needs to get some plain tshirts, as I have 1 non-logo or
Cthulhu tshirt that fits, and even if the job is casual, that rarely means
eldritch horror casual. So yeah, clothes shopping. Have I mentioned
I'm not a fan of clothes shopping. Oh well, I'll get it done.
I also got the bank accounts balanced, picked up assorted trash, made
a snack lunch and am vaguely vegging for a bit, then I'm off to run outside
errands and walk. So yes, I'm adulting like a boss today. Even if I'm
sitting at the Desk of Doom (tm) and watching 'Phantoms'.
Mood is still perky today, like yesterday. No complaining, I just wonder
what switch got flipped the other night. Or maybe I'm just winding
up for my Spawning Day. Either way, I won't complain.
Ok, and on that note, I'll call this a post. Catch you all later *waves
tentacles*
Tuesday of the weird, luckily it's a good weird. Woke up before my
alarm, went walking in the neighborhood of Château Innsmouth. Did
chores, went to the store, came home. Been watching the two versions
of 'The Exorcist' prequel, trying to decide which is less bad. (I
don't think either could count as good). So far, 'Exorcist: The Beginning'
is in the lead with the line "Having orgies including goats doesn't make
them possessed. Simply horny... and inventive" - Father Merrin. *laugh*
*time passes*
Ok, I finished up the movie while writing this (and not writing this,
focus is kind of shot). And I actually prefer 'The Beginning' over
'Dominion'. Not because it's a better movie, but it's a better horror/
exorcism movie. Dominion has a better plot, more detailed back story and
less random cruft in it, in general a better over all movie. But 'The
Beginning' is generally creepier, had a better exorcism scene, and had
more of a explanation of why the church itself was a big deal. Plus,
more Pazuzu. And in the end, really...all you need is Pazuzu.
Really not much else going on. Still staring at the bits of my resume,
occasionally making 'go together gestures' at it. I'm probably going to
take my car in for an oil change this week as well, since I have time.
Need to also move some cabling around, so Cthylla stops overloading the
UPS she's on, and probably other things to do that I'll come up with.
Weekend is for celebrating. Zoo, and dinner and friends, should be fun.
Coming up on my spawning day also means I need to look at my resolutions
for the last year, and come up with a new set. I really didn't get
many accomplished, or much progression. Oh well, it's not like this last
year was anything resembling calm. Maybe that's the focus for 42,
being calmer. Who knows. *sigh*
Ok, that's enough rambling. Have a good night, and may Pazuzu only
flap his wings at you *wink*
Skipped a Sunday post, mostly because there wasn't much to talk about.
Sunday blahs hit. I hung out with Amythest, and we watched a bunch of
NCIS episodes, I came home and spent the night in bookland. Slept,
had weird dreams. Got up, got moving, made myself go walk in the
mall. I really hope weather switches over to fall soon, I think I
rather walk away from people. Antisocial fox is getting more antisocial.
I'm feeling rather negative again. Found myself being paranoid while
hanging out with friends on Saturday. Nothing they did, but my stress
levels are up, and my upcoming spawning day has me kind of down. First
birthday without Mom. So yeah, not doing anywhere near my best lately.
On the plus side, had a friend ask me to help come up with a quick backstory
for a cultist character. He had the basic character, I helped work out how
said character would want to summon an eldritch horror from beyond space
time. (I also got to reference Spock, needs of the many outweighting the
needs of a few tasty sacrifices). So that was a nice thing. Right now
I'm trying to catch up on general chores, and the VM updates I didn't
do on Friday. There's somn other stuff to do, including finishing this
post. *sigh* Nothing else really to say for right now. Catch you all
later *waves a tentacle*
Ok, saw 'The Martian'. I'll be honest, I think I enjoyed this movie the
most out of the flicks I've seen in 2015. The science is good, with
nothing jarring me out of the story, Matt Damon has some epic snark lines,
and it hit me in some emotional spots, without being overdramatic.
Really, it was what space exploration flicks should be. I haven't read
the book yet, but I will. So if you like space, and a good story, go
see it. 5 out of 5 Red Planets.
